International Doctors
Moving your medical career to Australia can be an exciting step, but the pathway is different for every doctor.
Your medical degree, specialist GP qualification, country of training, experience and registration history can all affect the pathway available to you.
Doctor Alliance helps overseas GPs with the employment side of the move. We can discuss suitable practices, locations, remuneration, working arrangements and lifestyle while you work through the appropriate registration process.
Formal registration eligibility is determined by Ahpra, the Medical Board of Australia and the relevant specialist college where applicable.
Your pathway
Australia has different registration pathways for international doctors depending on their qualifications, specialist training and individual circumstances.
Some overseas specialist GPs may be eligible for the Expedited Specialist Pathway if they hold an accepted specialist qualification. Other specialist GPs may require assessment through a specialist college pathway such as the RACGP Practice Experience Program Specialist pathway.
Other registration pathways may apply depending on the doctor's circumstances.
Doctor Alliance does not determine registration eligibility, but we can consider your registration position when identifying suitable employment opportunities.
If you already hold a recognised specialist GP qualification overseas, your Australian registration pathway will depend on the qualification you hold and how it was obtained.
Some qualifications may be eligible for Australia's Expedited Specialist Pathway, while others may require assessment through the relevant specialist college.
We can discuss your background with you and take your registration position into account when identifying practices that may suit you.
Location and eligibility
For some overseas trained doctors, obtaining Australian registration is only one part of the process.
Doctors who are subject to section 19AB Medicare restrictions may need to work in a Distribution Priority Area, commonly referred to as a DPA, to access Medicare benefits.
Not every overseas doctor is subject to the same restrictions, so we consider each doctor's circumstances when discussing suitable practice locations.
DPA status can change, so the status of an individual practice should always be checked using the Australian Government Health Workforce Locator.
Check the Health Workforce LocatorThe Modified Monash Model classifies locations by remoteness and population size, from metropolitan MM1 to very remote MM7. It is different from DPA and may be relevant to training, incentives and workforce programs.
A Medicare provider number identifies a doctor at a particular practice location. If you practise from more than one location, you will generally need a separate provider number for each location. Where relevant, we consider provider number and Medicare requirements when discussing a position with you.
Finding the right practice is only part of the decision. We can talk with you about metropolitan, suburban, coastal, regional and rural locations as well as commute, family considerations, schools, community and the type of lifestyle you want outside medicine.
Support varies between practices. Where available, we can discuss relocation assistance, registration support, visa sponsorship and other assistance offered by the employer and help coordinate the recruitment side of your move.
